Wisconsin celebrates Juror Appreciation Month with new proclamations from state leaders

Juror Appreciation proclamations

In a show of unified support for the backbone of our justice system, the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Governor Tony Evers, and the Wisconsin Legislature have all issued new proclamations designating September as Juror Appreciation Month in Wisconsin. This month-long celebration highlighted the critical role of jurors in upholding justice and preserving democratic values.

The tradition of Juror Appreciation Month began in 2008 when then-Governor Jim Doyle issued a proclamation honoring jurors. The Wisconsin Senate and Assembly followed suit with resolutions to commemorate the month. The theme of that inaugural year, "Jurors Serve Justice; Justice Serves Us All," set the stage for ongoing efforts seen today.

Over the years, Juror Appreciation Month has expanded significantly. In 2007, approximately 60,000 Wisconsin residents reported for jury duty. By 2023, that number had risen to 75,000. This increase shows not only the widespread involvement of Wisconsinites in the judicial process, but also the essential nature of their contributions to the justice system.

This month provides an opportunity for Wisconsin to recognize and celebrate these unsung heroes of our justice system, serving as a reminder of the crucial role each juror plays in upholding justice.
