Hon. Moria Krueger
Dane County Circuit Court

Judge Moria Krueger, a trailblazer and champion for women's rights, passed away in late April at the age of 80. In 1977, Krueger became Dane County's first female judge, leaving an indelible mark on Wisconsin's judicial landscape.

Throughout her nearly three-decade tenure on the bench, Krueger's dedication to justice and fairness remained unwavering. Despite initial challenges, she earned the respect of her peers and the community, paving the way for future generations of women in the legal profession. Krueger's impact extended beyond the courtroom. As a founding member of the National Association of Women Judges, she advocated for gender equality and empowerment within the judiciary. Her contributions to drafting Wisconsin's first juvenile justice code and involvement with various organizations underscored her commitment to serving her community.

In retirement, Krueger continued her engagement with civic and educational endeavors, embodying a lifelong commitment to learning and service. Described as deeply playful and endlessly curious, she leaves a legacy of compassion, integrity, and intellectual curiosity.

Krueger is survived by her husband, Edward, her three children and five grandchildren. Her contributions to the legal profession and society will be remembered fondly.

Hon. Duane M. Jorgenson
Lafayette County Circuit Court

The Wisconsin judicial community mourns the passing of Judge Duane M. Jorgenson, who passed away in late April following a battle with cancer. Judge Jorgenson's distinguished career and unwavering commitment to justice left an indelible mark on the legal profession and the community he served.

Born on July 5, 1952, in Monroe, Wisconsin, Judge Jorgenson was characterized as a man with a deep sense of service and an unyielding dedication to his family and the law. He studied at Valparaiso University, earning a bachelor's degree in political science and education before obtaining a law degree from Northern Illinois.

Before his judicial tenure, Judge Jorgenson had a diverse career that showcased his entrepreneurial spirit and versatility. From owning and operating Jorgenson Supper Club to serving as a circulation manager for the Monroe Times to managing the demands of dairy farming, family and friends said he approached each endeavor with integrity and diligence. In 1991, he established the Jorgenson Law Office, providing counsel and comfort to those in need. In 2015, he was elected as Lafayette County Circuit Judge, a role he fulfilled until his passing.

Judge Jorgenson's commitment to community involvement extended beyond the bench, with leadership roles in various organizations, including the Apple Grove Lutheran Church, Darlington School Board, Lafayette County Bar Association, Master Gardener Association, and 4-H.

Governor Tony Evers released a statement following Judge Jorgenson's passing, saying in part: "From being a dairy farmer to later serving as Lafayette County Circuit Judge, the Honorable Judge Jorgenson was a true Wisconsinite who showed what it means to live by our shared values of integrity, civility, and compassion. Judge Jorgenson will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and community member who was not only committed to justice and fairness but who lived a selfless life in the spirit of service."

Jorgenson is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; four children; and ten grandchildren.

Hon. Jim Babbitt
Barron County Circuit Court

Former Barron County Circuit Court Judge Jim Babbitt also passed away in late April. With a career spanning decades, Judge Babbitt made significant contributions to the legal landscape of northwest Wisconsin.

Babbitt spent more than 30 years as an assistant district attorney for several Wisconsin counties, including Rusk and Barron counties. In 2008, he was elected as Barron County Circuit Court Judge, a position he held until he stepped down in October 2013.

Born and raised in Chetek, WI, Judge Babbitt and his wife Barbara were married for 30 years. Together, they created countless cherished memories, with some of their fondest moments spent living on the shores of Bass Lake. Judge Babbitt's love for fishing was evident, as he and Barbara often enjoyed peaceful hours casting lines and embracing the tranquility of lake life.

Judge Babbitt's impact extended far beyond the courtroom. His legacy as a jurist and a community pillar will be remembered fondly by colleagues, friends, and constituents.
