Final gavel: Judge retires from the bench

Hon. Frank D. Remington
Dane County Circuit Court

Judge Frank D. Remington has announced plans to retire from the Dane County Circuit Court on May 3, 2025. In a letter to Governor Tony Evers, he reflected on his time on the bench, calling it “a privilege and an honor” and emphasizing his commitment to fairness and impartiality in the courtroom.

Remington was appointed to the bench in 2011 by then-Governor Scott Walker and was later elected and re-elected by Dane County voters. Before serving as a judge, he worked as an Assistant Attorney General for 24 years under both Democratic and Republican administrations. In his retirement announcement, he noted his commitment to nonpartisanship and expressed concerns about what he described as increasing financial influence in judicial elections.

Over the course of his legal career, Remington worked in a variety of roles that focused on criminal law, constitutional issues, and regulatory matters. As a judge, he presided over a broad range of cases, from routine proceedings to complex legal disputes. He also engaged in judicial education efforts, speaking on legal topics and contributing to discussions on court procedures and the role of the judiciary.

Remington said he believes "it is time now to give someone else a chance to serve" and expressed confidence that Governor Evers will appoint a suitable replacement. His retirement will create a vacancy on the Dane County Circuit Court, with the governor expected to appoint a successor before the next judicial election.
