Judges, court commissioners, and legal professionals gathered in Brookfield from March 19-21 for the Wisconsin Office of Judicial Education’s 2025 Family Law Seminar. The annual program provided attendees with updates on case law, legislative changes, and best practices in family court.

The seminar opened with a session on ethical considerations in family law cases involving multiple proceedings. Other sessions touched on issues such as the intersection of family law and immigration, substance use as a chronic medical condition, and pretrial strategies.

A presentation by Phil Arkow of the National LINK Coalition explored the connection between animal abuse and family violence, highlighting its relevance in family law cases. Judicial security was also a focus, with an update on Act 235.

The program concluded with discussions on parenting coordination, talking to children in family law matters, and a refresher on the Wisconsin court system’s case management dashboard.

The Office of Judicial Education organized the seminar with contributions from a planning committee that included Commissioner Jason Hanson, Judge Yadira Rein, and Judge Thomas Walsh.
