The State Bar of Wisconsin held its annual meeting and conference June 19-21 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

Director of State Courts Audrey Skwierawski was on hand to deliver the opening remarks to attorneys and judges from across the state. Skwierawski, previously a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge, discussed the challenges and opportunities ahead for the state's legal community.

One of the pivotal issues she's addressed is court security, underscored by tragic events such as the 2022 murder of Judge John Roemer. This incident prompted legislative action, culminating in March with the enactment of judicial security legislation. The legislative step is part of broader efforts to ensure the safety of judges and court personnel across Wisconsin.

Beyond security concerns, Judge Skwierawski spoke to the attendees about ongoing efforts to actively address critical shortages within the court system. These include shortages of attorneys, court reporters, and interpreters.

During the conference, the State Bar of Wisconsin elected its Executive Committee and held a ceremony where Chief Justice Annette Kingsland Ziegler swore in new State Bar President Ryan Billings.
