Judges appointed in Dane, Lafayette counties

Payal Khandhar is the newest judge to sit on the Dane County Circuit Court, having been appointed in mid-June. She will preside over Branch 2, which came open following Judge Josann M. Reynolds's resignation. Khandhar, a highly respected attorney renowned for her dedication to justice and community service, will serve a term concluding on July 31, 2025.

Khandhar's legal career is marked by significant roles advocating for justice. She began as an assistant state public defender before co-founding Jasti & Khandhar, where she focused on criminal defense. Since 2018, she has also served as a supplemental court commissioner for the Dane County Circuit Court, providing her with comprehensive insight into judicial processes.

Governor Evers expressed confidence in Khandhar, citing her extensive legal experience and commitment to public service. "Payal Khandhar is a highly regarded attorney committed to service and dedicated to improving her community," he affirmed. "She will be an exceptional judge for the people of Dane County."

Khandhar, an alumna of the University of Wisconsin–Madison and its Law School, has dedicated her career to advancing fairness and equity. She has served on several boards, including as president of JustDane and on the board of directors for Federal Defender Services of Wisconsin, underscoring her steadfast commitment to public service and community welfare.

Khandhar emphasized her judicial approach, which is grounded in kindness, humility, and profound respect for all parties involved. "I am honored that Governor Evers has appointed me to serve in this important role," She commented. For decades, I have been working towards creating a more just and equitable community, and I intend on continuing my mission while serving as a Dane County Circuit Court Judge."

Lafayette County Circuit Court

District Attorney Jenna Gill has been named the newest judge to serve on the Lafayette County Circuit Court. Governor Tony Evers announced the appointment, which will fill the vacancy left by the passing of Judge Duane M. Jorgensen. She will complete a term ending July 31, 2025.

Born and raised in Lafayette County, Gill has served as district attorney since 2017. During her tenure, she has handled a wide array of cases, ranging from ordinance violations to complex criminal matters. Governor Evers expressed confidence in Gill's capabilities, stating, "Jenna Gill has demonstrated a profound dedication to both public service and community welfare."

Accepting her appointment with humility and gratitude, Gill stated, "I am deeply honored to accept the appointment to be likely the first female Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge. I am extremely grateful for the encouragement and support of my legal community, friends, and family. I remain committed to exemplifying the values our community holds while ensuring a fair and efficient court system as I continue to serve the people of Lafayette County."

In conjunction with Gill's appointment, Governor Evers announced the commencement of the application process for the Lafayette County District Attorney position. Interested individuals are invited to submit their applications by July 1, 2024, to GovDAapp@wisconsin.gov.
