Supreme Court headed for Portage - Limited seating remains for Justice on Wheels

Madison, Wisconsin - September 28, 2011

The Wisconsin Supreme Court will move its proceedings to Portage on Wednesday, October 5, conducting three hearings in the Columbia County Courthouse, Branch III, as part of its Justice on Wheels outreach program.

The visit will begin with a welcome ceremony at 8:45 a.m. in Branch III. Following this, the Court will hear oral argument in cases commencing at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The justices will have lunch with the Columbia County Bar Association and a number of local officials.

The historic visit marks the first time the state's high Court has sat in Portage. The justices move their proceedings out of the Capitol for one day during each term to a location chosen by Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson.

"Portage and Columbia County have played a key role in the development of the Wisconsin Supreme Court," Abrahamson explained, noting that three former justices of the Court had ties to Portage. "The area is rich in history, and we look forward to meeting the community and celebrating our shared history on October 5th."

A number of local schools will bring students, including Fall River High School, Lodi High School, Wayne Bartels Middle School and more.

Limited seating is still available for all three cases. Reservations are recommended and can be made by contacting Sara Foster at sara.foster@wicourts.gov or (608) 266-1298.

Note to electronic media and still photographers: Camera requests must be made to cover the Supreme Court’s oral arguments. Call Media Coordinator Rick Blum at (608) 271-4321. No request is necessary for the opening ceremony.
