Volunteer attorneys to staff Milwaukee self-help clinic

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - October 30, 2009

Volunteer attorneys assisted by Marquette Law School students are helping launch a program to provide self-represented litigants at the Milwaukee County Courthouse limited legal advice and referral services.

The program is being offered through a partnership of the Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic, the Milwaukee Justice Center, the Milwaukee County Bar Association and Milwaukee County Circuit Court, said Dawn Caldart, administrative director of the Justice Center.

The program provides participants with about 20 minutes to 30 minutes of limited legal advice on a one-time basis, Caldart said. If successful, the program is likely to grow.

"We have about another 40 attorneys who want to volunteer, so we're hoping, that if it works, we can add more days and times," Caldart said. Initially, the program will be offered from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays when the courthouse is open.

Volunteer attorneys from Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP; Michael Best & Friedrich LLP; O'Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong S.C.; and Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren S.C. will staff the clinic, with the volunteer Marquette law students, Caldart said.
