Wisconsin eFiling Update
There's snow time like now to eFile
The prospect of wintry Wisconsin weather gives pause to even the most seasoned of northwoods residents. Leverage the eFiling system to eliminate that slippery courthouse commute and enjoy the snow from the comfort of your office. And with the mandatory implementation in full swing, there's never been a better time to give eFiling a try. Check out some of the most recent system enhancements and see when mandatory eFiling will be rolled out near you.
What's new?
- Increased access to electronic documents is available, including redacted documents when applicable and transcripts during the appeals process.
- Non-party filers now have the ability to file documents requiring the signature of a court official (mediation agreements, etc.) and will receive email updates relaying the status of their filing.
- Notification emails sent to attorneys now include the attorney's name so recipients can easily distinguish who the email is intended for.
- Civil cases – Other Extraordinary Writ (30707) can now be electronically filed.
- The notification email confirming an attorney has withdrawn from a circuit court case now provides the withdrawn attorney a link to the signed order.
What's on the horizon?
There are a number of exciting features currently under development. A few that will be released over the next several weeks include:
- the ability to file additional documents along with the Notice of Retainer when requesting entry onto a case;
- the expansion of the court eFiling fee waiver for court-appointed attorneys to all case types;
- the addition of forms necessary to initiate the appeals process; and
- newly engineered file preparation and case view options to provide direct access for paralegals and assistants using unique user accounts.
Who's eFiling near you?
Recent mandatory eFiling implementations. Mandatory eFiling for civil, family, paternity, and small claims cases has been rolled out to 23 Wisconsin counties in the latter half of 2016: Adams, Ashland, Barron, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Dodge, Dunn, Florence, Green, Jefferson, Juneau, La Crosse, Marathon, Oneida, Ozaukee, Pierce, Racine, Rusk, Vernon, Waukesha, Waupaca, and Wood.
Upcoming mandatory eFiling implementations. Seven counties will implement mandatory eFiling in the first month of 2017, including:
- Jackson–January 3, 2017
- Iowa–January 9, 2017
- Richland–January 9, 2017
- Trempealeau–January 9, 2017
- Green Lake–January 17, 2017
- Sauk–January 17, 2017
- Walworth–January 17, 2017

Mandatory criminal eFiling. eFiling of criminal cases will be mandatory March 1, 2017 for all counties in which mandatory eFiling has already been implemented. As the remaining counties are implemented throughout 2017, criminal eFiling will become mandatory at the same time. The following 17 counties are currently participating in voluntary criminal eFiling: Adams, Ashland, Barron, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Dodge, Dunn, Florence, Jefferson, Juneau, La Crosse, Ozaukee, Pierce, Vernon, Waukesha, and Waupaca. Until March 1, counties that implement mandatory eFiling may decide when they would like to also offer voluntary criminal eFiling.
Probate eFiling pilot. eFiling of probate cases is currently being piloted in Ashland and Ozaukee Counties. There are plans to expand probate eFiling to additional counties in the first quarter of 2017. Please stay tuned for more information as a rollout plan solidifies.
