Judge Robert D. Sundby
Court of Appeals–District IV: 1986–1996Robert D. Sundby served in District IV for ten years and retired in 1996. He died the following year at the age of seventy-two.
Sundby was born in the Town of Dunkirk and graduated from Stoughton High School. He was a veteran of World War II and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School. As general counsel for the League of Wisconsin Municipalities throughout the 1950s, he gained expertise in municipal law and drafted much related legislation. He was city attorney of Monona, 1970-1981, and of Evansville, 1975-1985. From 1961 to 1986 he was a partner in the firm of Dewitt, Sundby, Huggett, Schumacher and Morgan. He also lectured at U.W. Law School.
His civic activities focused on young people. He was a past president and honorary board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Dane County, and he was involved in a program called Wisconsin Cares that offers early help for abused and neglected children.
An ardent bridge player, he achieved the rank of Life Master and wrote two books on the subject of bridge. Soon after retiring he traveled to Greece to empathize and kibitz at an international bridge tournament. He was an avid golfer as well and also enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada.
He was married to Analee "Casey" Grove-Sundby and had two sons, two daughters, and two stepsons.
