This statistical report presents information about the case filings and dispositions of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals during the month of May 2011 and to date for the year that began on January 1, 2011.
Opinions and
Orders Issued by the Court
The Court of Appeals issued 105 opinions, 57 summary dispositions, and 85 other written decisions in May. Opinions include three-judge and one-judge authored opinions and per curiam opinions. Summary dispositions include opinions issued in the form of a court order after the court has reviewed the briefs and the record and, generally, following a screening and decision conference. Other written decisions include memorandum opinions, which are issued in the form of a court order prior to a screening and decision conference, and miscellaneous orders terminating cases (e.g., voluntary dismissals and stipulations to dismiss). The Court of Appeals received 12 and disposed of 16 petitions for supervisory writ during the month. A petition for supervisory writ asks the Court of Appeals to order the circuit court to take a certain action in a case.

Petitions for Review, Petitions for Bypass, and Certifications to the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court received 54 petitions for review of decisions of the Court of Appeals, no petitions to bypass the Court of Appeals, and two requests for certification. In a petition for bypass, a party requests that the Supreme Court take jurisdiction of an appeal or other proceeding pending in the Court of Appeals. In a request for certification, the Court of Appeals asks the Supreme Court to exercise its appellate jurisdiction before the Court of Appeals hears the matter.
