Official court reporter

Candidates for Official Court Reporter vacancies in the State of Wisconsin must meet one of three minimum professional standards to be considered eligible for hire as Official Court Reporters. The standards are: (1) Graduation from a court reporting school approved by either the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA), (2) Attainment of Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification from the NCRA, or (3) Attainment of Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) certification from the NVRA. The Director of State Courts Office maintains a court reporter eligibility roster for placement of official court reporters throughout the State of Wisconsin. Salary is established based on evidence of qualifications and previous court reporting experience.

Additional information regarding official court reporter positions or placement on the court reporter eligibility roster can be obtained by contacting the Human Resources Office, Wisconsin Court System, 110 E. Main St., Ste. 430, Madison, WI 53703-3356; telephone (608) 266-3501; FAX: (608) 261-8293; 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Freelance court reporting services

Each of the ten judicial administrative districts of the Wisconsin Court System contracts separately for freelance court reporting services. Freelance reporters provide supplemental, contract services on an as needed basis and are not employees of the court system. Since freelance services are based on the needs of a specific judicial district, there is no guarantee of placement or assignment for freelance court reporters.

Freelance contract assignments are available for uncertified and NCRA or NVRA certified individuals. Per diem payments vary, dependent upon certification.
